Rainy Seasons
Life is not just about the good times, but also the bad; the rainy seasons. These are those tumultuous times. The times we do not wish to be in, nor do we wish to return once things have improved. But you see, there’s beauty in the rain. Though the clouds can seem gloomy, and the misty air is fraught with cold temperatures, the rain has purpose. A good reminder of this can be found in Romans 5: 3. In this part of scripture we are informed of a crucial benefit to suffering: to produce perseverance. To persevere is to “continue in a course of action even in the face of difficulty or with little or no prospect of success”. This, then, makes perfect sense as we can only learn to be able to deal with the rain healthily and effectively, if we experience the rain. But that’s not all Romans 5 continues in verse 4-5 explaining how this growth in perseverance is a growth in character and hope; something that the Lord God does not shame, but uplifts. (New International Version utilized).
It should be added that rain also allows for perspective. How can we truly appreciate the clear blue skies if we are never exposed to a cloudy overcast? The same is true for those hard seasons of life. Now I’m sure no one is asking for a hard season of life. But our lack of desire for one does not prevent them, nor does it make it less important to have. What it does mean, is that we can learn to be better able to cope with these seasons as they do come. Thus learning the perseverance expressed earlier, gaining hope for a better day, and building our character to put forward to the world.
