To be the bee, or not?
Bees are very interesting creatures. They are organized, have great memory, and actually have an ability to learn (they don’t inherently know how to make honey). Depending on how you measure it, you could say bees are very intelligent. That said, bees also have an achilles heel; honey. Honey is the food source of bees, and they will go to great lengths to consume it; even risking death. As you can see in this video, as the beekeeper harvests the extra honey from the hive, the bees gorge themselves on what they can get…even if that means drowning in it. Now I cannot say if bees are aware of their situation or not, but let’s say they aren’t. This picture plays a strong resemblance to how we can behave when it comes to our personal achilles heel. Procrastination, worry, overindulgence. All of these things, on the surface, are not deadly, but can lead to death. The death of character, aspirations, joy, peace, and if done long enough, life itself. And like the bees, we do not see it until it is too late. Until our wings are too sticky to work right; until our body is too heavy with honey. Oh how sweet it is, until it becomes a deadly pool of quicksand, and then what? A bee desires honey, that’s okay. But a bee would save it’s life if it were a little more aware of their situation and surroundings, and had a lot less tunnel vision on satisfying its physical drive and desire. Let’s learn to not be the bee.
